Bernice was exhausted when she arrived at St. Francis House. A resident of an assisted-living facility, she had received a ride downtown earlier that day. The facility’s driver had dropped her off at the doctor’s office and then said he would be back in a few hours to pick her up.
“I waited and waited, but I can’t wait anymore,” she told Sister Margaret. “I started walking but I don’t know my way around Puyallup and I have no idea where I am or how I am going to get home.”
Sister Margaret invited her to sit down and rest a bit. “Would you like a cup of coffee?” she asked. Bernice thought that was an excellent idea! When the coffee and cookies arrived, she began to relax.
As Bernice sipped the hot coffee, Yoko (our program manager) arrived to see if a bus ticket would help her. “Oh, yes! If I find the right bus, I know how to get home,” said Bernice. “I was so lost when I came here,” she confessed, “but Sister Margaret put me back together!”
