Warm and Safe During the Holidays

On January 5, 2016

Terry and Susan are one of the  many families whose lives are changed because of people like you.

We met Terry and Susan, an older couple, at our Evening Meal Program. They come eat with us almost every week night along with their two teenage grandsons that they are raising. Unfortunately, this family was homeless and had been living in their car for six months when we met them.

During the week of Thanksgiving, when the temperatures dropped very low, they came to the Clothing Bank for a few extra blankets and clothing. We noticed Susan’s feet were very swollen. Since she’s unable to lie down at night in the car, her condition seems to be worsening.

Because of generous people like you, we quickly made a decision to put this family in a warm motel over the holiday. With some extra persistence, we were also able to connect this family with temporary housing. Terry and Susan moved into their apartment in early December. “It’s hard to believe that we actually have a home again. It just doesn’t feel real yet”, Susan told a staff member.

Because of your goodness, many households in our community will be warm and safe as the holidays approach. We thank you for caring for your neighbors in need.
